THEY CALL ME DESTINY Cats these days star in their own YouTube videos, model for Instagram accounts and Facebook pages - some even have their own blogs – so it was only a matter of time before the feline frenzy expanded to the world of litter-ature. When I came across this meowmoir written by a rescue cat, I was instantly intrigued. “They Call Me Destiny” by Destiny Kalser with Fern Field Brooks is a pawsitively enjoyable read. Destiny tells how she was found by two little girls after her mother was killed in a hit-and-run. The girls hide her in a chicken coop, afraid to tell the adults for fear that they won’t be allowed to keep her. But when the poor orphaned kitten is discovered, the girls’ kindly Human relative realizes “it must be destiny.” Destiny the Cat’s purrsonal story includes many adventures – moving from a farm to a Manhattan townhouse, weekend trips to the Hamptons in a “Jaguar” (nothing like the big cat!), and even becoming a mother (this was the 60s, before spay-and-neuter was the norm). More than just a meowmoir, this book is really a love letter from a cat to the Human who took her in and gave her a home and a wonderful life. You know that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when a cat sits on your laps, purrs and stares at you with squinty eyes? That’s the way this book will make you feel.
